Choosing Between Beveled and Non-Beveled Vinyl Plank Flooring

by Jolie DB 09 Dec 2024

When it comes to selecting the right vinyl plank flooring, understanding the differences between beveled and non-beveled edges can greatly impact your decision. Both styles offer unique benefits and challenges that can affect the overall look and feel of your space.

Here’s a straightforward guide to help you decide which option might be best for your home or commercial area.

Beveled Edge Vinyl Planks

What are Beveled Edge Vinyl Planks? Beveled edge vinyl planks feature an angled cut along their edges, creating noticeable grooves between each plank. This design mimics traditional hardwood floors, adding depth and character.

Advantages:

  • Enhanced Realism: The grooves simulate the individual planks of hardwood floors, making vinyl appear more authentic.
  • Hides Subfloor Imperfections: The bevels can disguise small irregularities in the subfloor, making installation easier and improving the overall look.
  • Aesthetic Appeal: Beveled edges offer a classic look that adds visual interest and dimension to your flooring.

Considerations:

  • Cleaning: Grooves may collect dust and debris, requiring more frequent cleaning.
  • Moisture Accumulation: Beveled edges could potentially trap moisture, so they may not be ideal in highly humid or spill-prone areas.

Non-Beveled Edge Vinyl Planks

What are Non-Beveled Edge Vinyl Planks? Non-beveled edge vinyl planks have straight, clean-cut edges that fit tightly together, creating a smooth and seamless look across the floor.

Advantages:

  • Sleek and Modern Appearance: These planks provide a contemporary look with their uniform and seamless surface.
  • Easier Installation: Without grooves to consider, these planks can be easier to align and install, potentially reducing labor costs.
  • Ease of Cleaning: The lack of grooves makes it simpler to clean and maintain a flawless appearance.

Considerations:

  • Shows Subfloor Imperfections: Without grooves to hide bumps or gaps, any flaws in the subfloor may be more visible.
  • Less Texture and Depth: The smooth surface might lack the textured appearance that mimics natural wood or stone.

Visual Comparison

To help visualize the difference, imagine a room with beveled edge flooring next to one with non-beveled flooring. The beveled room has a classic, textured look with shadows highlighting each plank, while the non-beveled room offers a sleek, modern, and uniform floor.

Making Your Choice

  • Consider your style preference: Do you prefer a classic and textured look, or a modern and seamless appearance?
  • Think about maintenance: Are you okay with a bit more cleaning to achieve a certain aesthetic?
  • Evaluate your space's conditions: High-moisture areas might fare better with non-beveled planks.

Both beveled and non-beveled vinyl planks have their merits, depending on the look you want to achieve and how much maintenance you are willing to undertake. Ultimately, the best choice will align with your personal style and the practicalities of your living space.

What is Lorem Ipsum? Lorem Ipsum is simply dummy text of the printing and typesetting industry. Lorem Ipsum has been the industry's standard dummy text ever since the 1500s, when an unknown printer took a galley of type and scrambled it to make a type specimen book. It has survived not only five centuries, but also the leap into electronic typesetting, remaining essentially unchanged. It was popularised in the 1960s with the release of Letraset sheets containing Lorem Ipsum passages, and more recently with desktop publishing software like Aldus PageMaker including versions of Lorem Ipsum. Why do we use it? It is a long established fact that a reader will be distracted by the readable content of a page when looking at its layout. The point of using Lorem Ipsum is that it has a more-or-less normal distribution of letters, as opposed to using 'Content here, content here', making it look like readable English. Many desktop publishing packages and web page editors now use Lorem Ipsum as their default model text, and a search for 'lorem ipsum' will uncover many web sites still in their infancy. Various versions have evolved over the years, sometimes by accident, sometimes on purpose (injected humour and the like).
